I admit to not knowing much about jewelry, so I lucked out in getting this for my girlfriend for the holidays. The chain is a nice weight and size for a small or medium pendant, but she has commented that a large or heavy pendant is going to overpower the tension slide used to adjust the length. And she loves the ability to adjust the length, as she varies from low-cut outfits to more conservative sweaters and such and can wear this with them all. I purchased my wife a necklace last year that had a very fine chain, with a pendant hanging from it. The chain was very prone to knotting up. I purchaced this one to replace the original chain.
